Regional Climate Modeling and Data Assimilation Specialist

We are seeking an experienced Regional Climate Modeling and Data Assimilation Expert to join our Regional Models and Geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) division, based in Caserta. The ideal candidate will have a background in dynamical downscaling using Regional Climate Models (RCMs) and/or Limited Area Models (LAMs), with a particular focus on integrating observational data into numerical models.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Regional Climate Modeling and Data Assimilation Specialistwill support the Regional Models and Geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) division, with:
- Develop and apply regional numerical models to analyze atmospheric, oceanographic, or environmental phenomena at a local scale.
- Implement advanced data assimilation techniques using tools such as Data Assimilation Coding Environment (DACE) or similar software to integrate observational data (e.g., satellite, radar, meteorological stations) into regional numerical models, enhancing the accuracy of reanalysis datasets and weather forecasts.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary and international scientific communities to develop innovative solutions and advanced methodologies in numerical modeling and data management.
- Produce technical and scientific reports, present findings at conferences, and contribute to publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Actively participate in research projects in collaboration with universities, research institutes, and government agencies.
REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s degree in Atmospheric and Climate Sciences (or equivalent) or PhD in a relevant field (Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, etc.).
- Dynamical downscaling using Regional Climate Models (RCMs) and/or Limited Area Models (LAMs)
- Knowledge of data assimilation techniques, specifically methods for improving forecasts and regional climate reanalysis using advanced tools.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as FORTRAN and Python.
- Experience with mathematical libraries and tools used for numerical analysis.
- Familiarity with Linux and Windows operating systems, with the ability to work across different platforms.
- Experience with climate data management programs such as CDO (Climate Data Operators) and NCO (NetCDF Operators).
- Ability to prepare technical/scientific documentation, including project reports and research papers.
- Availability to travel for limited periods.
Optional Skills:
- Specific expertise in numerical models such as ICON, COSMO or other models.
- Good communication skills and the ability to present complex scientific concepts clearly.
- Strong problem-solving attitude, with the ability to analyze challenges and develop effective solutions.
- High motivation to learn and stay updated on the latest scientific developments and techniques.
- Strong time and priority management skills.
- A proactive, team-oriented approach with the ability to collaborate effectively with others.
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

- The Managers will be based in Caserta CMCC office.
- Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience.
- Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
