A one-year (renewable) Research Fellowship opened at the _Giovanni Solari Wind Engineering (GS-WinDyn) Research Group of the University of Genoa (Italy)
Title: “Wind field retrieval within thunderstorm cells through data assimilation of Doppler radar and scanning lidar measurements”.
Description: in the framework of the PRIN (Research Projects of Relevant National Interest) -WIND RISK Project (Prot. 2022NPKCLX), it is required to develop a scientific research on the measurement and modeling of thunderstorm winds (i.e., downburst and gust front) aimed at the nowcast and forecast of deep convective events in the troposphere. The candidate will be asked to develop/set up an algorithm for the reconstruction of the wind field within convective thunderstorm systems starting from Doppler radar and lidar measurements using data assimilation techniques (e.g., 3Dvar), or similar/alternative methodology. The algorithm will be properly validated with ground-based anemometric measurements and tested in an operational environment (TRL 6/7).
Research field: Atmospheric Sciences
Contract (duration, salary): 12 months (renewable), 27.133,00€ (yearly, pre tax pay), ~2.000,00€ (monthly, net salary). Position based in Genoa at the Department of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the University of Genoa.
Application: the successful applicant should preferably have a Master degree either in Environmental Sciences, Physics, Environmental Engineering or related field. A PhD in Atmospheric Sciences or related field is a big plus despite being not required. Skills in physics and computing are required.
