1. Junior Scientist – Climate Data Engineer

The CMCC Foundation is a scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, the society, the world of business and policy makers.

Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

Our Division of Advanced Scientific Computing (ASC) is looking to hire one talented, motivated and proactive Climate Data Engineer to work, within several European Projects, in team with scientists and engineers in computational science, data analytics, machine learning, and climate science.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Perform scientific research in the area of Big Data for Climate Science;
  • Design and implementing frameworks and tools for climate data management and analysis;
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports;
  • Engagement and contribution to open source software communities.

The job location is CMCC Headquarters in Lecce, Italy.
Remote working is considered as an option from Europe.

We are looking for a motivated person with the following requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science or equivalent fields;
  • 3+ years of research in Databases, Data Warehouse, Data Lake and/or Big Data Frameworks (preferable applied to climate and geo science);
  • Strong experience in using Python stack for scientific programming (numpy, scipy, pandas, xarray), parallel processing (dask) and for cataloguing and sharing datasets (intake);
  • Experience working with large weather and climate datasets;
  • Knowledge of Database technologies (MySQL, Postgres, Cassandra, PrestoDB, …);
  • Experience with Data Flow Automation (Prefect, Airflow);
  • Experience with in-memory analytics frameworks (Apache Arrow, Spark);
  • Experience in writing research papers for peer-reviewed journals;
  • Ability to work both independently and in team;
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English.

Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.

Some fiscal benefit could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researchers/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).

We offer the opportunity to join our team through a temporary contract of 12 months starting as soon as possible, with the possibility of contract extension based on performance, results achieved and new project opportunities. After 2 years, we will evaluate the possibility to offer a full permanent position within the Advance Scientific Computing Division. Annual salary ranging from 33k to 42k Euros, comprehensive of benefits, depending on qualification and experience.

2. Ocean Data Manager

Our Division of Ocean Predictions and Applications (OPA) is looking for a new position of Ocean Data manager, responsible for the management of oceanographic and atmospheric data to support both research and operational activities of the OPA and ODA divisions

The job location is CMCC Headquarters in Bologna, BO, Italy.

We are looking for a motivated person with the following requirements:

M.Sc. degree (or candidate for graduation in the next couple of
months) or equivalent working experience in Computer Science, Software
Engineering;

  • M.Sc. degree (or candidate for graduation in the next couple of
    months) or equivalent working experience in Computer Science, Software
    Engineering;
  • good knowledge of databases (i.e., mySQL);
  • good knowledge of programming languages (i.e., Python and/or Fortran
    and/or C);
  • good knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and script languages
    (i.e., *nix shell);
  • good knowledge of version control systems (i.e., git);
  • good knowledge of the English language;

3. Senior Research Associate – DevOps Engineer* ASC – Advanced Scientific Computing

Our Division of Advanced Scientific Computing (ASC) is looking to hire one talented, motivated and proactive DevOps Engineer whose main responsibilities will be:

  • Deployment, maintenance and monitoring of CMCC Data Management and Analysis Services using DevOps practices;
  • Implementation of various development, testing and automation tools to improve the deployment, the robustness and availability of CMCC Data Services.

The job location is CMCC Headquarters in Lecce, Italy.

Remote working is considered as an option only from Europe.

We are looking for a motivated person with the following requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering or equivalent fields;
  • 5+ years of experience using DevOps tools and technologies;
  • Excellent knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes;
  • Experience administering and deploying CI/CD pipelines with tools like Git, Jira, Jenkins;
  • Knowledge of monitoring tools like Prometheus, Zabbix, Nagios;
  • Familiarity with agile software development in Python;
  • Significant experience with Linux operating system environments;
  • Experience with Data Flow Automation (Prefect, Airflow) is a plus;
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills;
  • Ability to work both independently and in team;
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English.
