The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach aims to numerically resolve the primitive equations of motion, directly reproducing the dynamic and thermal processes that govern fluid systems. The use of sub-models or empirical parameterisation is reduced to a minimum and typically consists of introducing appropriate turbulence models. This entails a minimization of modelling errors and the possibility of accurately reproducing physical processes at small scales; however, it poses numerous challenges among which the high computing cost required and the possible numerical instability of simulations. It is crucial to address these challenges and broaden the application of high-resolution numerical simulations to environmental systems as an additional and effective analysis tool, capable of revealing turbulent mechanisms and processes that govern local dynamics which are often difficult to capture by measurements and observations. In this seminar, we show how the use of CFD techniques has been successfully applied to the study of environmental problems like pollutant dispersion in urban canyons, anabatic slope flows, and the unveiling of turbulent structures in thunderstorm supercells’ wake. These are framed in the activities of the Physics of the Atmosphere group at the University of Bologna.

Tony C. Landi dell’ Institute of Atmospheric Science and Climate, National Research Council (CNR-ISAC). The development of a modeling chain from continental to urban scale involves integrating various computational tools and approaches to analyze the key features from synoptic circulation up to building-resolved atmospheric dynamics. Currently, such an approach is essential for developing comprehensive models that can informdecision-making and urban planning in response to climate change and urbanization challenges. These resources reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the field, combining climate science, mesoscale and microscale meteorology, atmospheric composition, urban planning, and computational modeling to address complex environments. During the last years, much effort was made to enhance the numerical models with components needed for applications in urban environments, like fully interactive land surface and radiation schemes and chemistry. In this seminar will be presented how different scales and processes might be addressed by a proper use of numerical modeling. At the continental scale, Chemical Transport Models (CTMs) provide insights into the transport, chemical transformation, and deposition of atmospheric pollutants over large regions. These models incorporate comprehensive physical and chemical processes to simulate interactions between the atmosphere, biosphere, and human activities. They are essential for evaluating the long-range transport of pollutants and their effects on climate and human health. On the other hand, Urban-scale models, such as Large-Eddy Simulations (LES), resolve turbulent flows at high resolutions, making them suitable for detailed studies of the atmospheric boundary layer and urban environments. Highly accurate geospatial data (buildings, vegetation, streets, soil, water bodies, etc..) are needed to achieve representative results to understand the quantitative impact of the near-surface microscale structures on atmospheric dynamics and composition.

Environmental Meteorology Seminar – B. Neininger (MetAir)

A heuristic Lagrangian downscaling algorithm for assessing convection over complex terrain. Il seminario si terrà in presenza nell’aula 1P (primo piano) del DICAM – Università di Trento, in via Masiano 77, e sarà possibile seguirlo in streaming su Zoom attraverso il seguente link: https://unitn.zoom.us/j/84003106761 Meeting ID: 840 0310 6761 Passcode: 183780 AbstractAlpTherm is a tool for assessing convection for air sports, with a firstoperational version dating back to 1993. I will therefore outline thehistorical background and the special motivation for this appliedscience.AlpTherm3d is fully three-dimensional, using a high resolution for theorography, and is adaptable to any region where digital terrain data(e.g. SRTM) and initial fields (GFS, ICON-D2, or nearby soundings) areavailable.AlpTherm3d is using heuristic parameterisations for calculating thepixelwise heating or cooling exposed to direct and diffuse irradiationincluding albedo, longwave radiation, evaporation, and ground heat flux. After each time step of 10 minutes, Lagrangian pockets of air are movingeither katabatically or anabatically, forming individual thermals whenleaving the surface. As a last step, the mass balance is re-established.All these non-standard procedures will be discussed during the seminar, with an example for Trentino.Bio2019-now: Finishing and continuing a few activities, such as AlpTherm3d2006-2017: Teaching and research at the Zurich University of AppliedSciences https://www.zhaw.ch/en/engineering/ in aviation meteorology andenvironmental science1990-2019: Airborne research in the same field plus GHG withwww.metair.ch [1]1981-1995: Assistant and Postdoc in several research projects onmesoscale meteorology (e.g. ALPEX and MAP) and atmospheric chemistry, with an emphasis on photosmog.1974-2000: Active glider pilot and instructor, mainly in the AlpsMaster (1980) and PhD (1988) at the Laboratory for Atmospheric Physicsat ETH, after studying Physics.
