Environmental Meteorology Seminar – Veronica Manara

Per il ciclo “Environmental Meteorology Seminar”, nella giornata di lunedì 9 giugno, alle ore 17:30, presso la Lecture Room 1P (Floor 1) del DICAM dell’Università di Trento, si terrà il seminario dal titolo “How has the Italian climate changed over the last two centuries?”, a cura della dott.ssa Veronica Manara dell’Università di Milano. Sarà possibile seguire il seminario online attraverso il seguente link: https://unitn.zoom.us/j/82688854266, Meeting ID: 826 8885 4266, Passcode: 940169 AbstractIn the last decades, the scientific community has become aware of thefact that the real climate signal in the original series ofmeteorological data is generally hidden behind non-climatic noise causedby several factors. Therefore time series of meteorological data cannotbe used for climate research without facing this issue. Moreover, as therecords are rather sparse and a significant fraction of them has widegaps, the missing data should be filled and the series should be griddedin order to balance the areas with a high number of series with areaswith a low number of series. Finally, they could be averaged in order toobtain series that are representative of a wide area. The methodologiesused to set up quality-checked and homogenised datasets over Italy forsome variables like solar radiation, visibility, cloudiness, precipitation and temperature will be presented and discussed togetherwith the observed trends and the underlying causes. Moreover, theresults of some ongoing citizen science projects (e.g. Cli-DaRe, Re-Dataand Dieci e Lode), set up to digitise data available today only in paperformat will be presented.BioVeronica Manara is a researcher in the Department of EnvironmentalScience and Policy at the University of Milan. She obtained a degree inPhysics and a PhD in Environmental Science from the same institution. Her research focuses primarily on climate reconstruction and onunderstanding the reasons behind the observed changes during the lasttwo centuries in Italy, over the Greater Alpine Region and over theMediterranean region using observational data but also reanalysis andsatellite data. Initially, she focused her analysis on variables such assolar radiation, visibility, and cloudiness, and then also on variablessuch as precipitation, temperature and snow cover. In recent years, shehas started working on numerous citizen science projects to digitisedata that is currently only available in paper format.

“SISC2025: Innovation in climate research for societal transformation” is the title of the SISC 13th Annual Conference, taking place on October 22nd-24th, 2025, in Salerno. Official language of the Conference is English. The Conference aims at connecting leading scientists, researchers, economists, practitioners, business leaders, and policy makers, whose activities are focused on different aspects of climate change, its impacts and related policies. The call for abstracts is now open! We invite you to submit the abstracts on the following topics by, April 7th, 2025 TOPICS Topics of interest for submission include:      * At the intersection of Big data, HPC and AI for Climate Science    * Risk management, adaptation and social and economic transformations    * Changes in means and extremes: trends and dynamic at multiple scales    * Climate related impacts on natural and human systems across landscapes    * Mitigation technologies for ambitious climate targets See the call for abstracts for topics description and further details. ABSTRACT The abstract must be between 4,000 and 8,000 characters long (including spaces) should be submitted online in English, no later than April 7th, 2025.A maximum of three figures and bibliographical references may be included, which will not count towards the character count. The template is available on the conference website.Abstracts not responding to this criteria will not be considered.Authors are requested to choose the type of presentation (oral presentation or poster) catering for their preference.

Registrati subito!
